Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story, You will expand and refine the analysis you began in your proposal to write a
clear, well-developed paper. Use the following guidelines to prepare and write your essay:
1. Revise your thesis statement, ensuring that it is clear, specific, and debatable. Your thesis should be limited in scope and offer a specific interpretation of the work that will guide you in organizing your paper. It needs to present an argument and should not simply summarize the work. Your thesis statement should make a claim about a medical humanities issue that the author explores in the work.
2. Gather the evidence to support your thesis and build your argument. Your primary evidence will come from the literary work itself. You will integrate your analysis of key elements of the literary work with paraphrases of key passages of the work and brief excerpts that you put in quotation marks. (Use quoted material sparingly.) You will also explain how the references from the work support your thesis.
3. Outline and organize your paper. Like any other essay, an analysis essay must have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
Introduction (one paragraph): Your introduction should capture your readers’ interest. To bring immediate focus to your subject, you may begin the essay with a quotation, a question, or a provocative idea. Your introduction should introduce the literary work, its author, genre, publication information, and any background information necessary for your reader to understand your thesis. It should clearly and definitively state your thesis, typically at the end of the paragraph.
Body (several paragraphs): The body of your paper should include at least three paragraphs that support your thesis statement. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence followed by your analysis and support. Be sure to focus each paragraph around one primary point, supporting it with specific references (a paraphrase or quotation) to the literary work and your clear explanations (analysis) that show its significance to your thesis.
Use the “SEE” strategy to help you construct a well-developed, unified paragraph.
S: Statement about your topic that you are going to prove and explain.
E: Evidence that proves your topic, including references to the work and its literary elements.
E: Explanation or elaboration of your evidence that connects it back to your original statement.
Conclusion (one paragraph): Your conclusion should satisfactorily end your paper. It can restate the thesis in different words or summarize your main points. It can also make a pithy comment about the literary work. Do not introduce a new topic in your conclusion.
4. Give your paper an interesting title that suggests the approach you take in your paper.
5. Allow yourself time to write several drafts of your paper. The early drafts should clarify the content, including your thesis, development of ideas and support, and organization. Once your content and organization are satisfactory, check your drafts for clarity and coherence Make sure paragraphs are focused with relevant support and smooth transitions. Make sure that sentences are clear and correct. Finally, check your paper for grammar, spelling, and mechanics. Ask readers to check your work, including classmates or friends.
